Opening to your deeper self is a matter of getting into the right mental space so to speak, like the right dial on a radio to be able to pick up the signal.
You know you are not just your body. You are also not just your mind. And are also not just your body and mind put together either.
There is another level of you. There is a deeper you that is the one who notices your thoughts and sees you having experiences. It’s not your logical mind that chatters away about things to do and work to get done, it is a deeper mind that is peaceful and calm. You may be feeling sad and going through a hard time, but notice the you inside that is observing that you are feeling sad and going through a hard time. This is the place in you that is the depth of who you really are on a soul level.
Your logical mind is a tool you use to get things done and think things through. But this mind is not you, it is your tool. Just as your body is not you, it is your tool. The you using these tools is the you that you want to access to be able to feel your true self. This is why the period between waking and sleeping is a good place to start, because your logical mind tool is calming down and you can start to feel the deeper you between the cracks of the chatter. People who meditate can get to this space whenever they want, they know how to get behind the screen of their logical mind, also lovingly called the monkey mind. Once you are used to how this feels, you will be able to tell the difference between a logical/monkey mind thought and a message coming from the deeper you.
A key to telling the difference is that thoughts from the logical/monkey mind usually come as problems to be solved or things to get done. Messages that come from the deeper you are more like inner knowings about things where there are no problems per se, just things to know or situations to notice.
So try to see if you can feel this difference. Start noticing the you that is noticing you are feeling or thinking something. Try to take 10 minutes each day to just sit and do nothing, to open the space for your deeper self to emerge. I know this may be hard to set up this time for yourself, particularly if you have children and a busy life, but those 10 minutes will change your life. You will start to hear your inner self and get past the logical/monkey mind chatter. Give it a try, even for just one week to see how it goes….
